Thẩm Thúy Hằng
Merited Artist Nguyễn Kim Phụng, better known by her stage name Thẩm Thúy Hằng, was a celebrated Vietnamese actress and screenwriter, born on October 6, 1939, and passing away on September 6, 2022. During her illustrious career, which lasted nearly three decades, Hằng emerged as one of the most prominent figures in the South Vietnamese film industry from the 1950s through the early 1970s. She became an iconic sex symbol of her time and was consistently featured as a leading actress in numerous films, collaborating with talented directors from the United States, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Thailand.
In addition to her work in film, Thẩm Thúy Hằng was a significant figure in the traditional Vietnamese theatrical form known as cải lương. Following the reunification of Vietnam in 1975, she took on the role of mentor and coach, leading several distinguished theatre troupes and nurturing the next generation of actors, many of whom would go on to achieve their own success in the Vietnamese cinema landscape.
Hằng's contributions to the arts have left an indelible mark, and her legacy endures through the numerous performers she inspired and the unforgettable performances she delivered on both screen and stage.
