Dan Ashworth
Dan Ashworth, born on March 6, 1971, is a prominent figure in English football, currently serving as the sporting director for Newcastle United in the Premier League. His extensive career includes significant roles at both West Bromwich Albion and Brighton & Hove Albion, as well as a notable tenure as the FA's director of elite development.
Ashworth began his educational journey at the College of West Anglia from 1987 to 1989. His playing career started in the academy of Norwich City, followed by stints at Eastbourne Town and St. Leonards, as well as a brief time in the U.S. coaching West Florida Fury. He returned to England to play for Wisbech Town, but departed in 2000 due to financial difficulties at the club.
Transitioning into management, Ashworth became the academy director at Peterborough United in 2000, later taking on the role of center of excellence director at Cambridge United. In 2004, he joined West Bromwich Albion, initially as assistant to the youth team manager before stepping into the youth team manager role and then ascending to sporting and technical director in December 2007.
On September 17, 2012, he was appointed FA director of elite development, where he played a pivotal role in creating the "England DNA" initiative, aimed at enhancing player development. After resigning from the FA in September 2018, he became the Technical Director at Brighton, eventually joining Newcastle United in February 2022, further solidifying his influence in English football.
